  • A major security flaw has been discovered in a feature left on by default on most home WiFi routers. Using a tool released today, someone can hack into your WiFi router in a few hours and then often obtain your network password. Until router manufacturers release a fix, almost all routers are vulnerable to this unless they have WPS disabled. However, make sure you aren’t using WPS – if you entered the 8 digit pin off your router to connect to it, you are. Unsure if you are vulnerable or how to secure your router against this new threat? We can help! Just bring your router in to IT Xpress and we can ensure the configuration is secure and it is running the latest version of it’s software.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WSP), a protocol for connecting and configuring home wireless networks, can be hacked with a brute-force attack, according to a security researcher. In a proof-of-concept exploit, the researcher took advantage of extra information the target device sent back to the user after …

  • Excellent advice for the holidays as more and more children get online with phones, tablets, laptops, etc. Setting up basic parental controls isn’t that hard, though you can’t prevent access to everything. But this is a good start.

  • We’re VERY excited about a new system management tool that we hope to offer to our clients next year. It’ll be like having your own in house IT person who can make sure your computer is running at peak performance and any crashes or software updates are dealt with automatically. If your computer begins to struggle, we get notified about it before you even realize it and can often fix it remotely. Very cool stuff. We’re testing it out currently and hope to have it available soon!

  • I’ve gotten this question from a number of customers, so figured I’d share… If you have Microsoft Vista or Windows 7 and like to use Internet Explorer 9 or Google Chrome, there is no ‘search box’ anymore where you can type in something to search. Instead, simply type your search into the address bar and hit enter. It’ll use the default search engine to search and return the results.

  • We are seeing a lot of people with compromised email accounts. If your friends/co-workers tell you they are getting emails with just a link in them, your email account has been compromised. Most likely it is not a computer virus, but rather a hacker who has gained control of your email account online. They will often change your password to lock you out them spam people using your account. This can be VERY bad if your email address gets added to spam blacklists. ISPs can help you if you use their email systems, but if you use Yahoo, Google, AOL, Hotmail, etc. you’ll need to fill out a series of online forms to try and regain control of your account – but the hackers likely have done things that will let them continue to access your account. If you think your email acct has been compromised, we can help you regain access, strengthen your account security, and ensure the hackers cannot regain access after you change your password. Don’t give up that email address you’ve had for years – take it back with our help!

Windows *tries* to ensure you won’t corrupt your flash drive if you just pull it out, but it can’t ensure it – and all it takes is that one time and you lose everything… So be sure to eject the drive before removing it!

Do I Really Need to Eject USB Drives Before Removing Them?

  • The US news media has not covered this much, so in case you missed it, there has been epic flooding in Thailand, home to much of the world’s electronics manufacturing. In addition to the immeasurable human suffering, that flooding is having a HUGE impact that all of you will soon see. Hundreds of major electronic factories were flooded and knocked offline. Many are not expected to be back online until mid 2012. One industry hit especially hard is hard drive manufacturing. Many factories are offline and hard drives are becoming VERY scarce. One major PC manufacturer noted in an investor call they will run out of HD’s by the end of November. One company that makes 75% of the motors used to spin hard drives from all type of manufacturers is completely offline. A 2TB Western Digital HD, selling for $70 on Amazon just a few weeks ago is now $150 and rising. The price of computers and other electronics are going to skyrocket in the coming months. So be warned – as the holiday shopping season…
